Big Brother cast contract: the agreement houseguests sign
Over 12 seasons and 11 years, Big Brother has entertained and horrified us thanks to the many men and women who have signed up to be cast members on the show. Those houseguests were all required to sign a contract with producers governing their behavior before, during, and after the show, and until now, that contract has never been seen except by those who’ve signed it.
That contract is below, and is unmodified except that personal information and information identifying the season has been redacted. The contract is sent to all finalists before they go to Los Angeles for the finals casting process, and was provided to reality blurred by someone who received it. While houseguests have the chance to win $500,000 and live in an environment like no other, they give up a lot. They are also heavily controlled by producers, both inside the house and during a period of time afterwards. Is the experience worth the cost? Is our entertainment worth the impact it may have on the people who have volunteered for this experience?
While there is a lot that is specific to the game of Big Brother, much of the contract is fairly typical, including the legalese that essentially says producers own and can do anything they want with a houseguest, their story, their image, and footage of them, forever. Much of the language seems similar or even exactly like that in the Survivor cast contract, but there is also a lot that’s specific to the house.
Potential and actual houseguests agree to:
- read the rule book, which they are given before entering the house and also once they are inside the house. However, houseguests are also told that those rules can be “changed, modified or amended … with or without prior notice to me.” There is a detailed section in the contract about producers’ ability to change the rules and game at any time, which also says that producers’ decisions are final.
- be subjected to “physical, psychological and emotional strains and pressures … both during my stay … as well as after my stay in the House.”
- “a serious invasion of my privacy.”
- get tested for STDS but accept the risk of having sex with someone who might have HIV or an STD despite the results of those tests. Producers, however, do not “encourage any sexual activity among participants.”
- “waive any physician-patient priveleage” with health care providers, therapists, and others and all producers access to that information.
- not hold producers of CBS liable for “intentional or negligent infliction of emotional distress, defamation,” or other things, and understand that their own “actions and the actions of others … may expose me to public ridicule, humiliation or condemnation,” and producers can broadcast that.
- the game may contain twists that cause “anxiety, discomfort, embarrassment, anger and/or shock.”
- not engage in physical violence, “nonconsensual sexual contact,” and “intimidation by threats of physical violence.” You may recall that there have been threats of violence before; one of the show’s winners even threatened another houseguest by saying he looked forward to “the bones in your throat crushing between my fingers”. That was allowed because producers get to decide what constitutes those things; the contract explicitly says that “Producer needs to balance and preserve fairness in the competition while ensuring the ultimate safety of participants.”
- “not to damage the house” or “technical equipment.”
- have water “rationed” and understand that producers “control all power and other utilities.”
- only bring approved items into the house, and be searched before entering the house.
- let producers decide what information to share with them, including about personal or family-related events.
- that they will receive $750 per week that they’re in the house. There is no explicit mention of compensation for time in the jury house, but the contract says producers “may also give additional consolation and/or runner-up prizes in cash or in kind … but has no obligation to do so.”
- receive only a pro-rated prize if they are an alternate who enters the game after it has started.
- pose for their “individual portrait” for the memory wall.
- be interviewed by Julie Chen immediately following eviction, which is a contractual requirement.
- understand they may not be chosen; producers say they are looking for people who are “strong willed, outgoing, adventurous, physically and mentally adept, adaptable to new environments, and to have interesting life styles [sic], backgrounds and personalities.” Or, potentially, none of those things.
- be “aware that it is a federal offense … to do anything that would rig or in any way influence the outcome of the Series.” Producers, as noted above, can do whatever they want, however.
- not “disclose to any party” anything about the show for three years, and pay damages of $5,000,000 in liquidated damages for violating the confidentiality agreement. One lawyer has said that these kinds of clauses are invalid.

Hey B, it will take about 6 weeks before you really feel fine. I had mine removed in January (this has been quite a year for me). I admit, I had no idea what your gall bladder did. Now that I don’t have one I can tell you its function. Strange. Same with the colon story. I thought I knew plenty about the body, but no.
Take care of yourself and don’t overdo it. You might think you feel better until you turn the wrong way, or lift something that does not seem that heavy. Take care.

Me either! I hate carpet around the toilet. I also have lived in 2 houses with carpet in the kitchen. I hate that and don’t understand it. Throw rugs I get but not wall to wall.

Okay – I have to say officially that I can not stand Boogie. After what he did to Erika during all stars – just bleeech. I hope that Janelle and Britney target his team first. Especially since it looks like the coaches get to join the game at half time.

NMD, do you recall on the View how disgusted Rosie was over what Boogie did, she changed her seat & looked right in the camera & spoke to his mom. Rosie was mad & did not hold back.

I’ve never watched the view – but I think I sent an angry email to the network after that – swore I’d never watch again. Ummm – didn’t keep my word but I sure don’t like that guy.
I can’t stand the view too, I watched it on you tube. I would rather be waterboarded. I know we all age but he has aged & taken on a creep factor, esp if he wearing the glasses. While I was never a fan he never struck me as ick-poo creepster until this season.

Ian is a complete superfan – and can recite every houseguest and the order they were evicted for every season. I bet he’ll do great on the non-physical contests.

A true lover of the game & all it involves & the kind who send death threats to a persons family (shelly). We are an interesting breed. The only problem I have with this new twist of a season is that I think the returnees will overshadow the newbies. It feels a little like the 2 seasons of Survivor with one veteran returning on each team.
And – the coaches will get to play easy until half time – so they have a very strong edge on the others.
That being said – I hope this is Janelle’s season.

I haven’t watched ALL of the season’s of Big Brother, can someone fill me (us) in on what happened with Mike Boogie? He apparently screwed over another contestant during one of his earlier appearances on the show. Anyone who can tell us the story? Thanks guys!
Hi Lynn, I will try & answer as best I can. On the all star seasons “chill town” (Dr. Will & Mike Boogie) paired up with Janelle & Erica to get to the end. Chilltown blew major smoke up the girls a** & they were eating it up. They had an act in their Diary room sessions where they held their fingers up to their ears like they were calling each other on the phone & made jokes at J & E’s expense. One of the last ones was boogie asking will to nominate his showmance & he did. The next week will asked boogie to nominate his showmance & he did. There is a great utube video showing all the pretend phone calls & they were really funny, brutal & cruel, but funny. So its the final 4 & queen janelle voted to evict Will. Boogie was so crestfallen he started calling Erica his homance & said he knew she was a slut & played her accordingly. He also called Erica a whore/slut to her face. Really vile stuff. Erica & Boogie were final two & BB gave them a special final dinner & at this point Erica was ready to physically harm Boogie, she felt like such a schmuck, she thought he was being sincere. That is why even though Boogie won & Erica came in second, no shows wanted to interview boogie without janelle & Erica. The view & Live with Regis & Kelly were the most vocal. He is a pig, no doubt, but played a hell of a game. Hope that helps & any other BB fans please feel free to correct me if I got something wrong, thanks for everything Lynn xo

Also, Will & Boogie were brilliant in keeping J & E apart so they could not compare notes. Towards the end of the game they finally spoke, realized they do not hate each other & were puppets doing chill towns dirty work for weeks. They were super pissed. Watching the girls come to this realization was really good TV. The girls let the guys continue to think they hated each other. It was a shame because it was too little too late in terms of the game. While boogie is a total ass in the way he treats and talks to women, janelle and Erika were totally PLAYED by will and boogie. At least janelle opened her eyes at the end, while Erika really thought boogie cared for her, in the meantime he was basically calling her a dumb slut

So claims former S&M king Anthony Marini, who is suing his ex-flame Ashley Iocco in Manhattan Supreme Court for $820,000.

I’m so confused. I think Brit has turned on Janelle. She was telling Willie in the HOH that Janelle is switching up the Thursday vote to keep Kara. Brit was saying this is how Janelle works, she’s going against them. To secure herself later. Then Willie went on and on (as he does) saying how everything should be a group vote. LATER on the patio he was telling Joe (the cook) that he had to play his own game and do what was best for himself. No one is consistant.
They haven’t made it to the first eviction and that first Janelle/Brit teams alliance has fallen apart. I think they came out playing way too hard. Should be an interesting season!

Earlier yesterday Willie had a house meeting with everyone but the coaches and pretty much told them not to use the coaches.
It was interesting, he put out a good plan but he crowned himself and no one likes the one in charge.

I too can’t stand Boogie, but Brittany is playing just as paranoid as Willie. I would think since she has been in the house before she would be a little cooler. She really wants to stick with and believe her team, but Willie is the one stirring up all the problems and she’s not looking too good in my eyes.
Hi all, I predicted this would be a week of whiplash. Saw the fight & I give it a 4 on a scale of 10 for BB fights, but it is week 1. I can not sort out how or when Britt thinks Jani jumped ship. Jani has been talking to Dan alot & it upset Britt. If Jani is working with Boogie I haven’t seen it. Jani hates Boogie IRL. Boogies response to hearing that Willie asked JoJo to sleep upstairs so no one can get in her head was “good, let the ho stay up there” (paraphrasing) so he is still the same old charmer he was the last time he played. Crazy rumors about the coaches joing the game has everybody F’ed up. I do not recall the first elimination ever being so hard core & intense. First clue for me that this season was going to be good is I know all the new players names. That usually doesn’t happen for weeks. Willie blew it & this season is giving flip flopping a whole new meaning. I have no clue which way the votes are going to go, its a very nice change. Excited for eliminations tomorrow, Lisa

Good Morning BB fans, Wow! What a first week. It has been years since a week 1 live show was so exciting. I am loving the coach twist, I usually hate producer driven twists, but this is one that is working. As if I needed further proof, BB Karma does exist. I enjoyed knowing Willie was praying ABBFrank(anybody but) would not win HOH & BB Karma kicked his ass. I wish Jani & Britt were working together better than they are. I want Boogie to be broken & humiliated when he leaves. We should know who is nominated some time today. I haven’t recovered from ChenBot’s outfit last night. Willie has blown up after Janelle won the challenge and put all of Britts group on have not for the week. Feeds are Trivia for awhile now. Boogie called for BB shrink to come. Willie said he wouldn’t last until Thursday. WOW what a season!!!

Joe said willie was spouting off to Ian & threating to beat someone’s ass. Joe & Shane are not worried. Hi Lisa, I don’t have feeds but I was reading live updates over on Reality Fan Forum and read about it. Jokers actually even has more details. I hope that the crazy Cajun is on his way. Feeds I think have been down for 2.5 hours. There’s speculation that they might have also done noms while they are off the air.
I agree LR this has been an insane start to the season and a welcome relief from the housewives.
I am shocked that janelle teamed up with boogie again! I really hope he doesn’t screw her over again, she’d never live it down, lol

It’s hard to believe old boogers might have a heart. I doubt if Ian had anything to worry about. Only ones Willie would go after are janelle, boogers, frank, and Joe (I think).

Brittney is an awful coach.
1) She picked Willie when the others knew to pass on him
2) She gave Willie power – HOH – instead of letting him lie low
3) She fed his paranoia by telling him the coaches would enter the game
4) She had her own paranoia about Janelle – driving Janelle’s team away from hers
5) Instead of coaching her team to go with the flow – she let them make the rookie mistake of supporting Kara and setting up solid teams and making them obvious targets
6) Instead of calming Willie down, she talked openly about trading him if she had the chance
She went from the power position to bottom of the pyramid – well tied with Dan but he lost Jodi due to a game twist and not really his coaching.
Agree! Great points here, Brittney has never been the sharpest knife in the drawer, she was a terrible choice for a coach. Why didn’t they pick someone who played well and has a good head on their shoulders.
NMD, you broke that down, spot on. Britt won the 25K for being favorite houseguest, but I chalked that up to her home burning down while she was sequestered. I think the producers saw her as popular, she is very funny. She was not a huge gamer her season. I can’t believe Britt didn’t try to reel Willie in hard core. I think when Britt didn’t shut down the “house meeting” Willie called that excluded the coaches is when & why Janelle changed her game up. It was buggin me as to why J was so done with Britt. I am surprised, I thought Britt would be a better player, especially with what I had hoped she learned from what “The Brigade” did to her. Jani was forced to bail. Britt was in the bathrm last night telling Danielle how J plays with no emotion, total hardcore & not as loyal as people think. Jani must have seen it coming & Britt is going to inadvertantly help Boogie. Dam! POV results should be in soon

I have no idea why Britney was asked back as ‘one of the best players ever”. She sucked in her season and only got carried by the guys until they didn’t need her anymore! Some players are thinking whoever wins the POV should use it to put up Danielle and get rid of both her and Dan.
I personally don’t like that cause Dan is one of my favs.
Psol, i am a Dan Fan. I loved that he got Jerry’s (Judassss) vote for the win because no matter what was going on in the house Dan always said good night to Jerry. Common courtesy gave him the edge he needed to win. Dan’s simple act was not a snow job, he is a descent guy. I can live with him & Jani being the last two coaches. ABBB (anybody but boogie)! Lisa
ITA. Dan is my fav and I like Brit. I think she’s trying but no way was she going to be able to handle Willie. He came in with the strategy to cause trouble. The only coach that might have been able to handle him was Dan. She knows she made a huge mistake telling Willie about the coaches coming back into the game.
I’ve never been a Janelle fan. She is an awesome player but she just rubs me the wrong way and nothing has changed. She’s crazy to work with Boogers. I think her team made a bad decision keeping Frank and will end up regretting it.

Seriously on the Britney comment! She had her panties in avuncular still over the house meeting, and she needed to get over it. Was it dumb? Yep. But wasn’t the end of the world. I wasn’t a fan of hers during her season, and I’m meh with her this year.
I think Dan is thinking for further along in the game. He knows that he has a reputation as a good and sneaky player, therefore if he starts winning competitions the house would be willing to get him out quicker, especially with one player left. He’s definitely taking a chance, but winning 1 competition to guarantee one more week vs. trying to gain an alliance to take him to the end or at least further than one week.
I believe Boogie is now thinking of aligning with Dan, incase the coaches enter the game. But, as we all know, things in the BB house changes moment by moment.
I personally don’t know how Brittney made it as one of the coaches. She has shown us in these few episodes that she is not one of the best. I enjoyed her during her season, but there are so many others more worthy than she. Willie definitely got himself kick out, but Brittney lit the flame. You (nomoredrama) posted upthread all the reasons she is such an awful coach and I agree with all of your points.

Good day to all the BB fans, I saw a link on Jokers that linked to Dan’s blog he had someone post after he entered the game. He goes into great detail about his strategy & why. It was nothing short of brilliant. It certainly explains his game play.
Also, on Jokers someone named Miss Cleo did a post of the breakdown of the twist, especially in relation to chess, hence the massive chess board. It basically says that after the pawn’s (team members) are gone the King (coach) is not eliminated from the game when out of players, The King (coach) joins the game. Because of chess rules, which I don’t understand, the catch 22 is do you keep your pawns to try & win 100K or do you sacrifice your pawns to go for the 500K. Julie didn’t say they were out of the game when they have no one left on their team, just that they were no longer eligable for the 100K. It was the best theory I have read to date. Watching the feeds. They are having a party tonight. Everyone is getting dressed up. Wil is driving me nutso, he picks at his hair extensions 24/7, it’s kind of grossing me out. Danelle looks in the mirror 24/7 and is constantly fixing herself.

I wish someone was watching with me. Danielle takes soooo long to get ready. She did about 35 plus poses in the mirror. Practiced walking and watching in the mirror. Then practiced dancing in the mirror. Everytime she gets to the door she turns around and fixes herself more. Boston, I watched the live feeds last night until the party started. I actually cancelled my subscription this morning as there is way too much “wash, rinse, repeat”. Well it was actually Brittany, Janelle and Dan who reset the game, due to the fact that it only took one coach to press the reset button. As it turns out 3 of the 4 coaches press the reset button.
Janelle and Brittany both lied to the house stating that they didn’t press it, so the entire house thinks it’s Dan’s fault that the game was reset. Reading on Joker’s earlier Boogie stated that while he was in the DR they (production) led him to believe that more than one person reset the button.

I’ve heard all the coaches call the newbies dumb and I have to agree with them. Sometimes I wonder if they have ever watched this show. If they have, they would know not to trust Boogie. Boogie had a discussion with Danielle and now Danielle, Shane, Brittany and even Ian all want to backdoor Janelle. Dan doesn’t think that’s a good idea and tells Danielle when they’re alone that she’s playing personal and not to let Brittany’s dislike of Janelle affect her gameplay.

I wished that someone had explained to her his gameplay, especially during all-stars. They all seemed to have forgotten how he strung Erica along having her to think they were in an alliance, telling her everything that she wanted and needed to hear and then he and Will would go into the DR together saying “Bros before hos”. Why wouldn’t Dan, Brittany, Janelle or even Ian let her know. Plus Dan already knows that Boogie and Frank has been in the DR together this season. I really don’t understand why Dan or Brittany went along with this plan.

Hi all my fellow BBers, I hope everyone is well. Its eviction night, le sigh.Day is done, gone the sun…….bye JediJani (a live pandoras box is all I can think of to save her)! She played a very different game this summer, not what I was expecting. Jani knew she had a chance of playing & ignored it changing her social game. All she had to say to Boogie I’ll cut Joe & she would not be on the block. I think she wants to avoid Jury, her hesitation was deafening. Dani’s reasons are way to personal & very short sided. What was shown on TV was pretty accurate to what really happened, minimal editing IMO. That was a nice change. So Dani doesn’t like the way Jani cuts her eyes at her. If thats all it takes she is going to fail life. Buck up, this game is not for the weak.
All I know is that my hubs & DD asked me the same question this morning at different times “have these people every watched the show” & “don’t they get it that Boogie has no soul?”
it’s just not as funny without Dr. Will, different chemistry, boogie will cut Frank but we knew he would never cut Will. I am not sold on Boogie wanting to take frank to F2 like he did dr. Will.

I agree whole heartily about Janelles gameplay this season, she was(is) one of my all time favorites. I wish Dan had went with his first mind and either kept the noms the same or replaced Wil with Boogie. I’m more than sure he’s going to regret that move.
